College Newspaper Break Story Sooner

After last weeks shootings at Northern Illinois University(NIU) that left five dead, CNN wasn't the first to report on the event. But instead it was the Northern Star, the NIU college news paper.

The Northern Star was hit-hard by the lose of Daniel Parmenter, a student who worked as a sale representative for the newspaper. Besides suffering great loses, they were the first to report on the facts about the gunman taking his own life, long before major news outlets.

The staff has also work on other tragedies like Virgina Tech shootings last year. Both of the events are horrible and demoralize students and faculty, and some how they were able to pull together deliver the story.

Delivery of the news was quicker then even the largest based media outlets, but it hits-home-harder.

I wonder why CNN was late delivering the news? Part of me thinks it is because the news happened right there on campus. While it was a major odeal, the students felt strong enough to come together and get the word out. A shooting is always something important to know, even when it does hit home.

Impressive for the campus newspaper to get out the facts to the public before the news hounds of CNN could sweep in and make a media circus out of the campus. These shootings at all these college campuses are terribly sad and if things continue this way it is going to create a lot of negative atmosphere at campuses around the nation.

That is interesting to know that the Norhtern Star covered this story before CNN. It is a good thing for them. It just goes to show you that with all of our media outlets that exist they could have covered something like this instead of the latest on Brittney Spears. College shootings to me area always important to hear about. They could happen at any college at anytime!
