Discovery is going to be working with Oprah to help her in a 50/50 venture to launch a new channel called Oprah Whinfery Network(OWN). Discovery decided to dismantle the Discovery Health channel to aid in the effort. Personally I'm stoked to hear this because there is not enough television that is pro socially positive channels out there.
I'm not endorsing Oprah in any way, but its good to see a "celebrity" doing something good. Oprah has done very well for herself in the world of mass media with "O" magazine and Harpo and also the resent opening of her school in South Africa.
Oprah has an awesome grasp on how to turn heads and catch the attention viewers and this is what I think drew Discovery to her in the first place. Her influence can be felt in everything for book sells for NY times best sellers to endorsing Barack Obama in South Carolina. Only time will tell whether it will work out...

Oprah Winfrey has certainly made her mark in the world, and now we will have her own (no pun intended) network to prove it! While America, and the world, has benefitted from her insite and poignant observations, when will the "Oprah-mania" end? I appreciate all that she has done for the sexes and the races, but the line needs to be drawn somewhere. She dominates the airwaves and media already. She needs no help in getting her ideas out there, but, alas, more Oprah to the rescue. What next, an Oprah-land amusement park featuring Dr. Phil's Wild Ride-an insight into the mind?
I have respect for Oprah Winfrey. I may not support her completely, but how far she has come and all that she has accomplished is admirable. And you are right, it is a rare thing to see a celebrity helping others. However, I do believe that this next venture of hers is unnecessary and going a bit to far on her part.
She definently has made her mark in the world by doing things other celebrities would not have done. Now coming out with her own network on the Discovery Channel is just amazing. Although, I'm unable to watch her on a daily basis, but when I do she has great stories on her show. I believe that her new network is going to wow people just as much as her own show. She is definently doing a good thing for media viewers.
I really don't know what to thik of this. I'm sure the network will be succesful and help others but I'm a little annoyed at how much Oprah is obsessed with herslef. The magazine with her face on it everytime, Harpo (Oprah spelled backwards), and her show. But seriously Oprah does great things and I'm sure this change is for the better. Hopefully the new chanel will be as cool as Discovery Health once was.
I guess when you're as rich as Oprah, there is not much more you can do, except maybe, have your own TV channel. I personally think this could turn into something great. I love Oprah, mostly when she does her "Oprah's Favorite Things" shows, and really, as much as we can't stand him, we all know we secretly have a place in our hearts for Dr. Phil; who's cute little Texas accent we would probably have never known if it wasn't for Oprah. And what about Rachael Ray? Thanks to Oprah, we now get to watch her on 2 differnt channels. I'm quite excited to see who Oprah decides to give a show to, now that she has her "OWN" channel.
